Why is difficult to get rid of potbelly by exercise and diets – other parts of the body get slim faster?
There are many different reasons why the shape of abdomen changes. People tend to gain weight as they age. They consume the same meal but their metabolism slows down. Use of various medications, for example, hormonal, may also cause subcutaneous fat accumulation. After pregnancy, a woman experiences the following body shape changes: the abdominal wall loses its tonicity, the skin looks sagging due to irreversible increase in the space between the abdomen muscles. Quick weight loss presents its own problems such as excess skin. The abdomen shape may be predetermined by a person’s genetic family history.
Men’s abdomen changes occur for similar reasons. Besides „beer belly“ effect, they often have fat deposits on the sides of their abdomen. Most often diets and exercise will not be very helpful in these cases.

What can plastic surgery offer?
For some people, no matter how much they exercise or diet they can never seem to get the abdomen they want. Such people may choose to turn to cosmetic surgery and get a liposuction where fat is sucked out through small cuts in the skin that can be hidden quite easily with underwear. Liposuction can improve the contours of the abdomen, hips, buttocks, thighs, knees, ankles, arms or face by removing or even by adding fats.
An abdominoplasty can be combined with liposuction. The surgery involves the removal of excess skin in order to tighten the muscles of the abdominal wall.

What is the duration of the operation? What happens in the postoperative period?
Liposuction usually lasts about an hour, and abdominoplasty takes two hours. Following surgery, patients should wear a special corset-like garment for a month.

Can the effect be long-lasting? What does it depend on?
The results of liposuction and abdominoplasty can be long-lasting, especially if you exercise and limit your calorie intake.

What are complications associated with this procedure?
Possible complications are usually common to most surgical procedures. Antibiotics are needed to prevent infection. Early physical activity after surgery increases the risk of embolism. Patients are advised to stop smoking before surgery to avoid additional post-op complications.

Can this surgery be applied to pot-bellied men?
Men are also often bothered by changes in their abdominal wall contour. So all these surgical procedures can be applied to them too.

Over time, the waistline and hips are „deformed“, they become bulkier, and sometimes ill-proportioned. What are the causal and contributing factors?
There are many factors that contribute to these changes. First, it is important what anatomy of the body a woman inherits from her parents and ancestors. Dietary habits also play a significant role – women tend to store fats in their hips and abdomen bottom (they have the so called „pear-shaped“ obesity). Previous childbirths, contraceptives or other hormonal preparations, and reduced mobility can also have a great effect.

How waist and hip defects can be corrected by plastic surgery?
Liposuction is an effective contouring procedure to slim the waist and hip. The procedure usually lasts about 1 hour. Fat is suctioned off using special canullas. Scars are barely conspicuous. Generally, surgical incisions are hided by putting them in folds or anywhere else where they are naturally hidden, for example, in the areas covered by bikini.
Following surgery, a snug elastic girdle must be worn over the treated area for 3 weeks to control swelling of soft tissues and to help your skin shrink to fit to your new contour.

What results should you expect? How long will traces of liposuction remain?
Right after this treatment, it will be very apparent that the fat has been removed. However, the treated area (soft tissues) starts to swell. This is completely normal and swelling will gradually decrease in a few months. Liposuction may help to significantly improve the appearance of cellulite.

Can obese men benefit from liposuction?
Men tend to accumulate fat in the waist area – they usually have „apple type“ obesity. Male liposuction is an effective way to remove fat from men’s body.

Is liposuction dangerous?
Liposuction is one of the most commonly performed surgical procedures, but that does not mean that this operation is the simplest one recommended for everyone. It is important to remember that liposuction procedure is, in fact, a surgical treatment. Every surgery has possible risks, and the same is true with liposuction, though this treatment with small incisions to insert a cannula is a minimally invasive procedure. The risk of medical problems can be minimized by avoiding excessive removal of fat and by closely following your surgeon’s advice on follow-up care during the healing process.

What can liposuction do and what cannot it change?
Liposuction is not meant as a weight loss medium. Many patients hope that their plastic surgeon will help to get rid of additional 10-15 or more kilograms. Liposuction is not a substitute for weight reduction that can be attained through dieting and exercise! It should not be expected to eliminate cellulite and stretch marks from the body. Liposuction can enhance the contour of your body, especially the areas not responsive to dieting or exercise such as sides of thighs, waistline, inside of knees, abdomen and chin.

Will fat grow back after liposuction?
Fat cells are removed permanently, they do not grow back. With a small weight gain or loss, the areas treated by liposuction generally maintain their new silhouette.
